Aguirre replaced Mauricio Pochettino in early December following a bad run of form that had seen Los Pericos hover dangerously over the relegation places.
However, under the former Real Zaragoza coach they have now put together a run of four games unbeaten and took a point against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
“On Sunday it will be a difficult game,” Mascherano told Barca TV as his Barcelona side welcome city rivals Espanyol this weekend.
“They are difficult, Aguirre has changed the way Espanyol play. The picture is very different to what it was with the previous coach.
Mascherano then discussed the return of coach Tito Vilanova who has recovered following surgery on a throat tumour.
“For us, after how we felt before the match against Real Valladolid, it is important to be close again to Tito. It is great news.”
