Aguirre and his representative to meet with Espanyol officials this afternoon, with Marcelino is also in talks,  as Pochettino faces the axe.

Reports circulating in Spain this morning, suggest that time is up for Espanyol manager Mauricio Pochettino, with his team rooted to the foot of the table.

Following the 2-0 home defeat against Getafe on Sunday, Pochettino suggested he was “capable of leading the team,” asked for “stability and unity” but also accepted that a manager is “ultimately responsible.”

One stumbling block for Espanyol, was seen to have been the considerable amount of compensation they would have to pay, to terminate the contract of the Argentine manager. In a state of desperation at their situation in the league however, it appears the club are prepared to cut their losses, sack Pochettino and bring in someone else to take the team forward.

Early news circulating from various sources in Barcelona are claiming that Espanyol are certain to appoint Marcelino García Toral as the new manager this afternoon. He most recently had an unsuccessful spell as manager of Sevilla.

In addition however, there are conflicting reports emerging that Javier Aguirre is also to have talks, after his representative revealed the Mexican manager is also set for talks with Espanyol this afternoon. The most recent La Liga post Aguirre held, was managing Real Zaragoza after a year managing the Mexican national team.

Unless any more candidates appear, it looks like it’s between these two coaches for the job at Espanyol, with an announcement said to be close. Possibly this evening.
