According to Radio Marca’s Javier Amaro, the Atletico Madrid youth product will join the club to add depth to Spanish manager, Roberto Martinez’s squad in their fight to stave off relegation.
Martinez has been productive in just the first day of the January transfer, claiming Manchester United midfielder, Angelo Henriquez on a season-long loan.
Wigan are also in the process of finalizing a deal for Honduran international Sporting Kansas City midfielder, Roger Espinoza, but due to visa issues, the deal has yet to be completed.
Joel will challenge current second choice keeper, Michael Pollitt for the back-up role, and possibly even challenge Ali Al Habsi for the starting spot.
Wigan currently sit 18th in the Premier League table and Martinez hopes with reinforcements such as Joel, their fate will not come down to the second to last match, as it did last year.

Note: Wigan’s fate did not come down to their last game of last season, they were already guaranteed safety in their previous game!
Apologies, it has been corrected to “second-to-last game”
