It took extra time for the Galicians to dispatch their first round opponents, Almeria, but not much, as Celta’s Roberto Lago scored the decisive goal just three minutes into extra time, sealing the fate of the Segunda squad and getting Paco Herrera’s men to a knockout date with La Liga giants, Real Madrid later this month.
Celta came into the match two goals down and in the first half, it looked like Almeria were going to be the winners.
However, following halftime, Celta came out looking like the dominant team they should have been in the first half, as Arsenal loanee, Park Chu-Young got things started at the 55th minute to put the home side up 1-0 (1-2 agg.).
Almeria still had the upper hand on goal advantage and looked as if they may come away with the win until a goal by Roberto Lago in the 90th minute made the score 2-0 (2-2 agg.) sending things into overtime.
Yet, Celta were on top of Almeria and pressed the Segunda side until the 109th minute, when Enrique De Lucas sealed Almerica’s fate and sent Celta Vigo into the next round, where they will face a formidable Real Madrid side.
