Atletico Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois was forced to close his Twitter account following Saturday’s derby match with Real Madrid after nasty taunts from fans.

The Belgian keeper, on loan from Chelsea, has been in sensational form for Diego Simeone’s side for the past season and a half but failed to stop Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick on Saturday night.

What followed was an attack from some Atleti fans over Twitter who directed abuse at the youngster blaming him for the result and Courtois had no option but to close the account.

Users from around the world rushed to his defence following numerous death threats and expressed their support, sending thousands of messages to the keeper.

Radamel Falcao also showed support over the social media site and Courtois re-activated his account later on Sunday.
