Runaway leaders of the Segunda Division, Elche, have reached the halfway point in the league with a record points total.

Elche CFElche’s goalless draw at Guadalajara saw the leaders stay eleven points ahead of second placed Girona, their 49 points including fifteen wins, four draws and only two defeats. No team in Segunda history has managed such a feat.The team has been at the top of the table for the entire season and even though they have drawn the last 3 matches, their pursuers have shown no signs of catching them.Girona could only draw with struggling Real Madrid Castilla and Almería, third but on the same points (38) as second placed Girona, also managed just a solitary point against Villarreal. This was despite playing the last half an hour with an extra man.

The 3rd team on 38 points, Alcorcón, lost against Sabadell, and although Barca B were convincing winners 4-2 against Xerez, they remain 14 points from top spot and will, of course, not be allowed to be promoted to La Liga in any event.
