The Brazilian is having the best season of his career, but was forced to come off the pitch in the first half of Sunday’s vital match against Barcelona, after he pulled up in obvious pain and had to be helped off the pitch.
An MRI on Monday confirmed a slight tear in the quadriceps, but the club’s chief doctor was clear that it was unrelated to a previous hamstring injury that forced Luis several games earlier in the year.
Reports had circulated in recent weeks that Atletico Madrid are seeking a viable back-up to Luis, to sustain the Brazilian over a long season, which now seems a priorty in the January transfer window.
Fortunately for Atletico Madrid, due to the timing of the injury before the winter break, Luis could only miss one match, next week’s contest against, Celta Vigo.
