With talk developing even more that Adrián López is set to leave Atlético Madrid for Arsenal, Ben Crump questions the reasoning behind the move and suggests the Gunners should avoid signing the Spanish striker.

BenISFAfter giving up the chase to sign David Villa from Barcelona, Premier League side Arsenal have renewed their interest in signing Adrián López from Atlético Madrid, with a deal reportedly close.

However, exactly why they are interested in the Spanish winger is not really known and some Gunners’ fans are a little bemused that Arsene Wenger is prepared to pay over £12m, for a player profile they seemingly already have in Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain.

López has failed to gain first team chances this season under Diego Simeone despite a brilliant 2011/2012 in which his 11 Europa League goals, helped Atléti to that particular title.

That for me is a particular worry as the former Deportivo man has become extremely inconsistent and would spend any amount of time trying to refind that form, if he moves to North London.

It is a risk. Signing a player who has sat on the bench for half a season and only scored three goals up to this point and although he would add depth to the Arsenal side, he is not likely to be any better than the likes of Andrey Arshavin, Gervinho, Ramsey and the already mentioned, Walcott and Chamberlain.

Two years younger and at the peak of his career, having started so young. Theo Walcott is having a great season and has bettered his 2011/2012 season already, scoring 14 goals and assisting 10 for his team.

My inclination would be to avoid signing Adrin López. Even if somewhere hidden behind that inconsistent and confidence lacking figure, does lie a Spanish winger with the ability to beat players, score goals etc, now just doesn’t seem the right time, for the club or the player.

Let us know what you think. Do you agree with the Ben Crump? Would signing Adrián López be worthwhile?
