SOS: Real Oviedo

by TomConn | Posted on Thursday, November 1st, 2012

One of Spanish football`s most historic clubs is in danger of permanently closing its doors, as financial hardships and the economic crisis in Spain and have made day-to-day operations of the Segunda B side impossible.

The club is responsible for some of Spain`s finest exports as Arsenal`s Santi Cazorla, Swansea City`s Michu and Chelsea midfielder, Juan Mata all got their start at this prestigious club.

There is now an effort to raise capital for the club and we at Inside Spanish Football are calling on all lovers of Spanish Football to do whatever they can to help save this club.

We have provided details for those of you who are interested in contributing to this worthwhile cause and encourage everyone to share this with anyone who may be interested in contributing as well.

  • The window to purchase share begins on November 3rd to November 17th and the minimum price per share is €10.75.
  • Contributions can be made by bank transfer to an account set up through the club at Bank of Santander – Account Number: 0049 4325 61 2410004177
  • For those abroad who would like to contribute by wire transfer- IBAN: ES 96 0049 4325 6124 1000 4177

By purchasing shares, you will also become a shareholder of the club and be entitled to attend the General Shareholder`s meeting held annually by the club.

Again, this is a tremendous cause and a chance to give something back to help save a club that had produced so much talent and brought immeasurable enjoyment to our lives.

More information can be found at RealOviedo.es and we have provided a link to the club`s official statement concerning their recapitalization here.

Update: The club has announced that a PayPal account is in the works for those who wish to purchase shares from abroad and how those purchasing shares will receive confirmation.

“Real Oviedo would send you by post the titles of the shares that make you own part of the Club. You would just need to email your address info@realoviedo.es with your PayPal or Bank transfer transaction number and Real Oviedo will send your shares to your front door.”

According to Sid Lowe, when the club does active their PayPal account, the price per share will be a “fraction” more (€11.50) due to the comissions paid to PayPal, but not enough to deter you from contributing as much as you can!

All of those purchasing share will in NO way assume any of the responsibility for any future debts that may occur with the club, but there is no future montary gain, either.

Update 02/10/2012 9:53pm:

Real Oviedo have announced that all those who purchase shares on Saturday, will also be invited to attend Saturday evening`s match against Real Madrid ‘C’, free of charge!  Incredible opportunity to visit the beautiful stadium and see two magnificent teams, all free of charge!  The reasons to contribute are overwhelming and the club is doing everything possible to reward shareholders for their support!

Update 02/10/2012 10:21pm:

Per Sid Lowe, PayPal account will be live and ready for share purchases when they go on sale tomorrow morning.  We will update as soon as we have official word the Paypal account has gone live!

Update 02/10/2012 10:35:

Per, Salvemos Oviedo here is an example of the Certificate shareholders will received upon purchase of shares!

Update 02/10/2012 11:30pm:

Real Oviedo has asked everyone who plans to purchase shares tomorrow at the club, to take a photo with their official shareholder certificate and tweet the picture with the hashtag #yosoyelRealOviedo to show your support for the club!

UPDATE 03/10/2012 9:30am:

We finally have a site available for all of you who wish to purchase shares of Real Oviedo.  Just click on the link below and select English Version at the top and there rest should speak for itself, just follow the steps and you will be on your way to doing your part to save this historic club.  You must have a PayPal account in order to use the website. If you don`t have a PayPal account, you can open one by clicking HERE. Once you have selected the amount of shares you wish to purchase, write the name you wish to put on the certificate.  In the following box it asks for you DNI/NIF/CIF number.  If you don`t know what that is, you probably don`t have one and in that case don`t write anything and just continue on with your purchase by clicking ‘Comprar Ahora’ or ‘Buy Now’.  After that, it will ask you to confirm your information, billing information and credit card information.  Paypal is a very secure website, so there is little to no risk in inputting your credit card information.  Once that is done, the rest is self explanatory and you should be one your way to owning one of Spanish football`s most prestigious clubs!  Makes sure that after the transaction has been completed you  email Real Oviedo (info@realoviedo.es) with your name (and name you want on shares), address, reciept number and all of the other information given after the purchase. Enjoy and spread the word!!

Thank you to all of those who expressed interest in supporting this cause, you are truly the reason we do what we do.  On behalf of Ben Crump and Tom Conn, we thank you for supporting this important piece of Spanish football history!

Update: 08/11/2012:

The response has been overwhelming and the support of this club is truly inspiring.  On Thursday, the club announced they have raised €550,000 in the six days since the window for purchasing shares began last Saturday.  Currently, the most notable figures who have bought shares are former youth products; Arsenal`s Santi Cazorla, Chelsea`s Juan Mata, Swansea City`s Michu, Atletico Madrid`s Adrian, as well as footballers, former Real Madrid and current Al-Sadd striker, Raul, as well as Mexican international and current AC Ajaccio goalkeeper, Guillermo ‘Memo’ Ochoa.  However, the bulk of the shareholders are the over 5,000 who have purchased shares via PayPal.

Following the tremendous response, many fans are clamoring for information on how to purchase merchandise of their new club.  The club is working on creating an online store, in which fans from all over the world can purchase anything and everything, Real Oviedo.  We will post that link the minute it is available.

If you were still on the fence about purchasing shares, just note that the club has announced that all foreign shareholders will be granted free entrance into any game!  All you need to do is present your shareholder certificate and you can watch your club for free.  The perfect opportunity would be this weekend, when Real Oviedo takes on Real Madrid C and plan a march to the match at 5pm.

The club is in a much better position than they were a week ago, thanks to the tremendous support, however, there is still work to do.  The club still needs over €1 million in order to stave off liquidation on November 17th.  The word is out about the plight of Real Oviedo, reaching every corner of the world, so we encourage everyone to ask friend, family, anyone to purchase shares and save this historic club.  If you need ideas, here is one from Spanish journalist, Edu Polo, taken from the recent Champions League match between Barcelona and Celtic at Celtic Park.

Update: 09/11/2012:

Per David Rodríguez Glez, Real Oviedo have collected €652,000 with a week remaining!

Per Sid Lowe, Real Madrid have just bought €100,000 worth of shares, putting the total at roughly €752,000, putting the club under halfway to their goal of €1.9 million by 17th November.  However, due to the increase response, they have doubled they numbers in just a few days, making their goal, if continuing this pace, well within reach!

Update: 13/11/2012:

Per AS and Sid Lowe, Real Oviedo have collected over €1.1 million with a quarter of the shareholders purchasing shares via PayPal from over 60 different countries.

Per David Rodriguez Glez, last Sunday`s match against Real Madrid C was such an event that it was the 7th highest attended match in all football competitions in Spain last weekend.

The window is closing to purchase shares and raise the €800,000 remaining, but the club is confident that they will reach their goal and usher in a brighter future, with a newer and more diverse fan base.

UPDATE: 15/11/2012:

REAL OVIEDO HAS BEEN SAVED!!

Per Sid Lowe, Real Oviedo president, Toni Fidalgo announced that €1.4 million has been raised in purchased shares, while donations from former youth products, Arsenal`s Santi Cazorla and Chelsea`s Juan Mata for roughly €700,000 have ensured the club`s immediate survival.

However, you are still able to purchase shares until the 17th November, because while there is no longer an immediate threat of dissolution, the club is still in dire straits financially and could use all the support they can get.

Also, in order to meet the new shareholder`s demands for club merchandise, the club announced that their official online store will be up and running in a few days, which can be found at TiendaRealOviedo.com.

I’m in England. I don’t have an IBAN number. How do I help?

    • Hewe says:

First of all IBAN stands for International bank account number, every one has it, just ask your bank and they will give it to you..
But to help here you need to make an international transfer and the only way to do this is through “international payment” with your account therefore you received the “IBAN” only problem here is that they don’t give you the Swiftcode but a good bankteller might be able to find it for you..

  21. Mollo says:

Thousands of thanks to those who can help us at this critical moment. At this stage the margin is too narrow. Every little amount of money will be greatfully considered by lots of people that support this team.

Things have not be done propperly fot the last years. Additionally spanish football current management should be reevaluated. However this is out of scope of this term.

    Thanks and regards

    • TomConn says:

Bobby, I would still do it just to avoid confusion and make sure everything goes smoothly and you have a record, even though your receipt should work fine. Thank you for your support!

  40. Really nice info you have here, gracias

  41. Jordi says:

I’ve just bought my share through PayPal, I have E-Mailed info@realoviedo.es so they can send me a certificate with my name on it…do they understand English?

anyway I’ve been spreading the word of Real Oviedo on various forums, i hope more people can spread the word so we can get more buyers to save this great club.

    • TomConn says:

Jordi! Thank you very much for your support. There are people who can speak English at the club, as they have gotten a steady stream of foreign shareholders and tweet in both English and Spanish. You have nothing to worry about on the English front, but due to the overwhelming support, you may not get your certificate as soon as possible, considering the thousands they have had to go through.

  42. Seagull says:

Just wanted to say thanks for this concise info on Real Oviedo and its plight. I just bought some shares and am proud to be helping a great club.

As a Brighton fan I know what it’s like to face losing the club you love but also, in our case, to come back from the brink to enjoy a bright new future. I can be done with the help of football fans everywhere.

Finally, is there a place to buy official merchandise from Oviedo? I’m sure many of us “owners” would love a shirt, pennant or mug.

    • TomConn says:

      John,
Thank you and thank you for your support! There are an ever growing number of clubs being forced to close their doors, but I’m hoping we can all come together and help this one.

The official store is currently a work in progress. They have heard the clamour from fans such as yourself, and are currently working on setting up the online store. Check back and we will post the link and all the necessary info as soon as we get it.

Thank you again for your support!

  43. [...] Anyone can become a shareholder by contributing via bank transfer or PayPal. [...]

  44. Alex says:

proud to be an Oviedo shareholder, I wish them well. Regardless of which club you support, by helping Oviedo you are supporting football.

although I didn’t realise that box was to enter the shareholder name. looks like I’ll be purchasing more!

    Alex,
    Australia.

  45. Fabrice Charles says:

I read this story in the NYT and on this website. I emailed them to get more info on how to help out via paypal. If anybody who is overseas used Paypal could help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

  46. Fabrice Charles says:

nevermind. I figured it out. For anyone using Paypal, here is the link:

    http://www.realoviedo.es/yosoyelrealoviedo/ingles/index.html

You dont need to enter in your passport info either.

glad to be part of history!

    • TomConn says:

It’s also in bold letters at the bottom of the article, if you click on it, it takes you right to the site and the passport information was also listed. Thank you for your support!

  47. Angela says:

I know it’s past the Nov.17th deadline, but I just found out about this from a friend who purchased shares. Is it still possible to buy shares? I’d love to buy some for my husband to give for christmas….

    • TomConn says:

      Angela,

Unfortunately, the shares were only available to purchase during that window. The website to purchase shares has also been taken down. I’m sorry, but if you’d like to purchase a t-shirt from their official store, I have posted the link below. If he wears a t-shirt, it costs as must as one of the shares, meaning in a sense, you are contributing just as much to the cause as those who purchased shares. I know it’s not the same, but it’s about your only option at this point. Thank you for your support!
