Pablo Hernandez gave the hosts the lead on nine minutes, as he hammered home an effort from 10 yards and Valencia looked to be on their way to a routine win.

Things got even better for Unai Emery’s side when Pablo Alvarez was shown a straight red card for fouling Aritz Aduriz in the first half but if anything the sending off spurred on Zaragoza.

Manolo Jimenez’s men levelled on the half-hour makr as Apono scored from the penalty spot.

Apono then doubled his tally with 13 minutes remaining with a brilliant left footed strike to cap off a good counter attacking move by the visitors.

Franco Zuculini was then sent off in stoppage time but it hardly mattered as Real Zaragoza held on to a win that could save their season.
